Authorization of Transplantation

The Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority (PHOTA) holds the authority to allow or reject any donation, considering the social and medical condition of potential donors and recipients. To get a transplant, potential recipients first need to contact our registered transplant hospitals.

Every transplant hospital has its own criteria for evaluation. If the transplant center accepts you as a candidate, it will refer your case to us for final approval. The decision to allow a patient get transplanted is taken on a case-by-case basis, depending on the benefits and risks associated with the quality of the organ and the circumstances of the individual. We evaluate biological and documentary evidence of relationship including computerised national identity card (CNIC), passport, birth certificates, Family Registration Certificate (FRC), marriage certificate and others in all cases of living donation. In addition, the evaluation is performed to make sure that no adverse physical, psychological, or emotional outcome will occur - before, during, or following the donation.

All donors (living or deceased) must be registered with our provincial registry. The benefit of saving another by becoming a living donor must be weighed carefully against the risks that come with any major surgical procedure, as well as financial considerations. A healthy donor faces the risk of an unnecessary major surgical procedure and recovery. We also maintain a computerised record of living donors for post-transplant monitoring.
